Bitta Commission guide
Advanced models
Every model in the Advanced commission models module with short examples, per-event versus period-close calculation, modifiers, multi-dimensional rates and formulas.
status: verified applies-to: 1.1.2.0rev: 1
The Advanced commission models module adds fourteen models to the five core models, plus formulas, multi-dimensional rate tables and period-close calculation. This page lists every model the calculation engine supports in Release 1.1, with a short example of each, and explains the modifiers and formulas you can combine with them.
Before you start
- Switch on Advanced commission models in Commission Feature Management. The component editor then offers the full model list and a Model Settings group.
- You need the Bitta Commission Plan Designer permission set (BAA Comm Plan Dsgnr).
- Components created while the module was on keep calculating if you switch it off later, but you cannot add new advanced components.
How models are calculated
Models fall into two groups:
- Per-event models price each sale when a calculation run processes it: Flat Rate, Progressive Tier, Tiered Rate, Retroactive Tier, Flat Amount, Per Unit and Formula.
- Period-close models are calculated once for the whole period by Close Commission Period: Bonus, SPIFF, Scorecard, Discretionary, Growth, Residual, Royalty, Manager Override, Pool, Ranking, Guarantee and Draw. During normal runs they record a zero measurement-only earning.
At period close, base models are calculated first, then manager overrides, then guarantees, then draws. Each close appends only the difference from what was already recognized. See Bonuses and SPIFFs for the close steps.
The Calculation Interval setting switches Flat Rate, Progressive Tier, Retroactive Tier, Flat Amount, Per Unit and Formula from Per Event to Per Interval, so the whole period base is priced once at close. Tiered Rate has no per-interval form because it depends on the order of sales.
Rate models take a percent in the rate table. Amount models take an amount. For a period-close amount model, Amount Means on Commission Rates explains what the single amount pays, for example the bonus amount, the pool per period or the guaranteed minimum.
The advanced models
| Model | Pays | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Per Unit | A fixed amount per base unit sold. | 5.00 per unit; 10 units pay 50.00. See Percent of sales, margin, and per unit. |
| Formula | The result of an active earning formula. | A formula combining BASE, TARGET and RATE for a custom payout curve. |
| Bonus | A fixed amount once per period when a condition is met. | 500.00 at 100 percent attainment. See Bonuses and SPIFFs. |
| SPIFF | A fixed amount per qualifying sale in a window. | 25.00 per sale of selected items in March. |
| Scorecard | Target incentive times the weighted score of approved objectives. | Objectives scored 100 and 120 percent at equal weight on a 1,000.00 target incentive pay 1,100.00. |
| Discretionary | Approved amounts entered by users, within a budget. | A 250.00 award approved by a second user. |
| Growth | A rate on the uplift of the period base over a baseline. | Base 12,000.00 against baseline 10,000.00 at 5 percent pays 100.00. |
| Residual | A rate on recurring revenue for a number of months after the original sale. | 2 percent of recurring revenue for 12 months; nothing after the contract ends. |
| Royalty | A rate on another participant's credited base, or on credits with matching strategy codes. | 3 percent of a referred partner's 10,000.00 pays 300.00. |
| Manager Override | A rate on the team's credited base or earnings. | 2 percent of team sales of 20,000.00 pays 400.00. See Manager overrides and team credit. |
| Pool | A period pool shared across eligible participants. | See below. |
| Ranking | Fixed prizes, or shares of a prize pot, to the top ranks. | See below. |
| Guarantee | Tops other earnings up to a floor. | See Draws and guarantees. |
| Draw | Tops other earnings up to a floor, optionally recoverable. | See Draws and guarantees. |
Growth without a baseline
Growth compares the period base with a fixed Baseline Value, or with the same measure in the Baseline Period (blank uses the period immediately before). If no baseline exists, the whole period base counts as uplift and is paid at the rate. A Condition Value sets a minimum growth percent that must be reached before anything pays.
Pool
A Pool shares one amount per period across the eligible participants assigned to it. Minimum Base excludes participants below a period base. Pool Allocation decides the split:
- Share of Base: in proportion to each participant's base.
- Equal Share: equally.
- By Rank: using rank share lines.
Example: a pool of 3,000.00 by Share of Base, with bases of 6,000.00, 3,000.00 and 1,000.00, pays 1,800.00, 900.00 and 300.00. Rounding is distributed so the parts add up exactly to the pool.
Ranking
A Ranking pays the top ranks. Ranking Method chooses Top N (rank share lines pay the top ranks), Percentile (each participant is paid by the highest percentile band reached) or League (each peer group is ranked on its own, formed by primary team, country/region or participant type in League Source). Ranking Basis ranks on the period base, the attainment percent, or the relative improvement over a baseline period. Minimum Participants sets how many eligible participants are needed before anyone is paid, and Timed Window turns a ranking into a contest over a date window.
Example: a pot of 1,000.00 with rank shares of 50, 30 and 20 percent pays 500.00, 300.00 and 200.00 to the top three. Tied participants share the combined prizes of the positions they hold.
Rank share lines and product mix lines are maintained on Commission Model Lines, opened with Rank Shares and Mix Lines on the component editor after the component is saved.
Modifiers
The Modifiers group on the component editor is optional. Leave the defaults for the plain model. Anything you set joins the calculation definition and is explained on every earning.
| Modifier | What it does |
|---|---|
| Band Basis | Rate bands bounded by the cumulative amount or by attainment percent of the period target. |
| Hurdle Mode, Hurdle Basis, Hurdle Value | Cliff pays nothing until the hurdle is reached, then pays the full cumulative entitlement. |
| Period Cap Amount, Period Floor Amount | Maximum and minimum cumulative entitlement per calculation period. |
| Weight Mode | Multiplier applies the component weight as a factor, so weights need not total 100. |
| Gate Component, Gate Attainment Percent | Pays only when another component reaches the gate attainment. |
| Pair Mode, Paired Component | Best Of or Worst Of recognizes only the higher or lower of two components per period. |
| End-Dated Participants | Stop After Version End credits nothing new after the participant version ends and prorates caps and floors. |
| Base Formula | An active formula that reshapes the cumulative base before the rate applies. |
Tiered Rate accepts only Band Basis and interpolation.
Multi-dimensional rate tables
For Flat Rate, Flat Amount, Per Unit and the three tiered models, Rate Dimension on Commission Rates adds a second dimension that selects the rows per participant: the assignment currency, the participant's country/region, or the participant type. Each value needs its own complete schedule. A row with a blank Dimension Value applies to every other value.
Formulas
Commission Formulas holds governed, versioned formulas. A formula can use BASE, TARGET, ATTAINMENT_PCT, RATE, the component measure code, other active formulas, numbers, arithmetic and functions such as IF, MIN, MAX, SUM, AVG, ROUND, ROUNDUP, ROUNDDOWN, ABS, NOT, SAFEDIV and CLAMP, with comparisons, AND and OR.
- Create a formula with an expression, for example MAX(0, BASE - 0.5 * TARGET).
- Choose Validate to parse it and report the first problem.
- Choose Activate to freeze its normalized text and hashes and make it available to components.
- Use it as the Earning Formula of a Formula component, or as the Base Formula of another component.
Tokens shows the compiled tokens, and Dependencies shows the formulas and measures it references. Retire stops new components from selecting it; published plan versions keep their frozen copy.
