Territories group sales by customer, geography, salesperson, dimension, store or item, and assign each group to an owner. Bitta Commission uses territories to decide who is credited when a plan assignment targets a territory, to find overlay specialists, and as a condition in credit rules. This page explains how to set up territories, rules and owners, and how to test the result.
Before you start
- You need the Bitta Commission Setup Administrator permission set (BAA Comm Setup Admin).
- Create the participants, positions or teams that will own territories. See Positions, teams, and hierarchies.
- Decide your priority scheme before you enter rules. A lower priority value wins.
Create a territory
- Open Commission Territories and choose New Territory.
- On Commission Territory, fill in the General group:
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Code, Description | Identify the territory. |
| Territory Type Code | GEOGRAPHY, ACCOUNT, PRODUCT, CHANNEL, RESPONSIBILITY_CENTER, DIMENSION, STORE or INTEGRATION_DEFINED. |
| Status | Draft, active or retired. Only active territories take part in resolution. |
| Effective From, Effective Through | The dates the territory version applies. |
| Default Priority | The priority given to new rules. A lower value wins. |
| Exclusive | Whether the territory expects to be the only match for its sales. |
| Parent Territory Code | An optional parent for hierarchical reporting. |
| Governing Matching Rule | The code of a plan rule whose conditions a sale must also satisfy before this territory can match. Leave blank when the territory rules alone decide. |
To change a territory from a date, select it on Commission Territories and choose New Version. The new version copies the effective matching rules and links to the previous version, which ends the day before.
Add territory rules
Each rule matches one attribute of a sale. Add rules in the Rules part of the territory card, or on Territory Rules.
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Rule Type | The attribute matched: customer, customer posting group, country/region, postal code range, salesperson, dimension, responsibility center, store or item. |
| Match Value, Match Value To | The value to match, or the first and last value of a postal code range. |
| Dimension Code | The dimension whose value is matched, for dimension rules. |
| Effective From, Effective Through | When the rule applies. |
| Priority | A lower value wins across territories. |
| Specificity Score | A higher score wins among equal priorities. Blank uses the default for the rule type. |
| Status | Only active rules take part. |
Assign owners
A territory owner is a position, a participant or a team. Choose Owners on the territory card to open Territory Owners, then choose New Owner.
- On Territory Owner, choose the Owner Type: Position, Participant or Team.
- Choose the Position Code, Participant No. or Team Code.
- Enter the Assignment Role Code, such as OWNER or OVERLAY, the Priority, whether the owner is Exclusive, the Allocation Percent and the ownership dates.
Position ownership follows whoever occupies the position on the sale date. Saved ownership rows are immutable; add a new dated row to change ownership.
Test territory resolution
Before you rely on a territory, test it with a sample sale.
- On Commission Territories or the territory card, choose Test Resolution.
- On Test Territory Resolution, enter a Sale Date (the work date by default) and any of Customer No., Salesperson Code, Responsibility Center, Store Code, Item No. and Dimension Set ID. The customer's posting group, country and post code are read from the customer card.
- Choose OK. Territory Resolution shows every territory whose rules matched, ranked by priority and then specificity.
Exactly one row is Selected, unless a tie must be resolved. The result shows the strongest matching rule type, the matched value, the owner position, the owner participant (blank means the owning position is vacant) and the owner team, with an explanation of the ranking.
TIP
Test the boundary cases, such as the first and last postal code of a range, a customer that matches two territories, and a date just after a territory version ends.
How territory resolution works
For each sale, the app evaluates every active rule effective on the sale date and collects the matching territories. It ranks them by rule priority (lower wins) and then by specificity (higher wins). If two territories still tie, the tie is reported instead of guessed.
The selected territory's owner is resolved in this order: an effective owning position first, then a participant or team.
Territories feed crediting in three ways:
- Plan assignments by territory. A plan assignment with the Territory basis credits the participant who owns the territory on the sale date. See Plans, versions, and assignments.
- Overlay credit. An additive overlay credit can give extra credit to the territory owners that hold a given assignment role, weighted by their allocation percent. See Crediting rules, splits, and overrides.
- Credit rule conditions. A credit rule can require that a sale falls in a territory, including within a territory hierarchy.
What to check if it goes wrong
| Symptom | What to do |
|---|---|
| No territory is selected | Check that the territory and its rules are active and effective on the sale date, and that the sale carries the attribute the rule matches. |
| Two territories tie | Give one rule a lower priority value, or make one rule more specific. |
| The owner participant is blank | The owning position is vacant on that date. See vacant position credit in Positions, teams, and hierarchies. |
