Earnings and the commission ledger

How Bitta Commission records earnings, period earnings, eligibility and balance movements in append-only, hashed ledgers, and how corrections add entries instead of changing history.

status: verified applies-to: 1.1.2.0rev: 1

Bitta Commission keeps its results in append-only ledgers. An earning, once written, is never edited or deleted. Returns, corrections and true-ups add new entries that point back to the original, and every movement of money between pending, eligible, payable and paid is its own entry. This page explains the ledgers finance teams work with and how to read a participant's position.

A return adds a negative delta earning instead of changing the original.

Each movement between balance buckets is its own append-only entry.

The evidence chain

Each earning sits in a chain of linked records, each one immutable and hashed:

  1. Source fact - the posted document line. See Business Central sales sources.
  2. Credit - who received credit and how much. See Crediting rules, splits, and overrides.
  3. Measure and attainment - the measured value and progress toward any target.
  4. Earning - the commission amount under the plan version in force.
  5. Eligibility entries - movements between Pending, Eligible, Held and Forfeited. See Eligibility, aging, and holds.
  6. Balance entries - movements between the balance buckets, through to settlement and payment.
  7. Settlement, accounting and statement records - downstream documents that reference the earnings they consumed.

The Commission Earning card holds the IDs of the source fact, credit, measure and attainment entries, the run and the trace root, so you can follow the chain in either direction. See Explain any earning.

Commission Earnings

Open Commission Earnings to see every earning line. The page is read-only.

Field What it shows
Business Date The business date of the source that produced the earning.
Commission Model The model that priced it, for example flat rate or tiered.
Final Earning Amount The amount written by this entry.
Participant Currency Code The currency the participant is paid in.
Prior Recognized Entitlement / Current Cumulative Entitlement For cumulative models, the running entitlement before and after this entry.
Delta Amount The difference this entry adds. For returns and corrections it is negative or positive.
Correction Sequence No. Zero for the original earning, higher for later corrections in the same chain.

Useful actions:

  • Source Evidence opens the source fact.
  • Original and Return Earnings lists all earnings for the same participant, component and correction root.
  • Correction Links shows the immutable original-to-delta links.
  • Trace Nodes opens the calculation trace.
  • Calculation Run opens the run with its stage control totals.
  • Release Pending Eligibility moves pending amounts to eligible where the policy condition is met.

Period earnings

Some models pay on the whole period rather than per document, for example target bonuses, rankings, pools, draws and discretionary amounts. Their results are recorded in Commission Period Earnings with the Close Type (Period Close, True-Up or Discretionary), the base, baseline, rank, share and an Explanation. Each also creates an earning ledger entry. True-Up Chain shows every later adjustment for the same participant, component and period. See Advanced models.

Commission Balances

Open Commission Balances to see how money moved between buckets for each participant. Each row is a movement with a From Bucket, a To Bucket and a Signed Amount in the participant currency.

Bucket Meaning
Pending Earned, waiting for the eligibility condition.
Eligible Available to the next settlement.
Held Kept out of settlement by a hold.
Payable Selected into a frozen settlement.
Settled Paid.
Recoverable A negative position to be recovered from future pay.
Written Off A recoverable amount that was written off.
Forfeited Pending commission that will not be paid.

To see a participant's position in a bucket, filter on the participant and the To Bucket and From Bucket, or use the role center tiles and reports described in Role centers and reports.

NOTE

Apply missing forfeitures writes the Pending-to-Forfeited balance movement for any forfeited eligibility entry that does not have one yet, so the Pending position matches the eligibility ledger. It requires finance-wide access and is safe to run more than once.

Immutability and corrections

Earning, eligibility and balance entries reject any change or deletion. An attempt to edit one raises an error such as "Earning entries are append-only and cannot be changed." This is by design:

  • A return adds a negative delta earning linked to the original invoice earning. See Returns and corrections.
  • A cost change on a margin plan adds a correction fact and a delta earning.
  • A manual correction goes through a governed request with a reason and approval, and adds a delta earning with a difference explanation.
  • A period-level true-up adds a new period earning in the same chain.

If a delta arrives after the original earning has already been settled, the frozen settlement is not changed. The delta is a new earning with its own eligibility and balance movements. On the accounting side, a posted accrual adjustment is paid through the original settlement line's AP or payroll documents. See Settlements and pay groups. A negative position is handled as described in Clawbacks and recoveries.

Rounding and precision

Amounts are rounded with the Calculation Precision and Rounding Direction on Bitta Commission Setup. Each earning keeps its Pre-Round Entitlement, Rounding Adjustment, Amount Precision and Rounding Direction Code, so the rounding is visible and reproducible.

Hashes and audit

Every earning stores a Calculation Input Hash, a Calculation Definition Hash and an Entry Hash. Balance and eligibility entries are hashed too. An auditor can recompute a hash and confirm that the stored entry matches its inputs. Replaying the same calculation does not create a second earning. See Audit and security.

Reading earnings from other tools

Read-only API endpoints expose earnings (commissionEarnings) and balances (commissionBalances) for reporting tools, alongside settlements, statements and accounting entries. They cannot create or change ledger entries.

If the ledger does not look right

  • An earning is missing. Check that the source fact exists and that a calculation run completed for it. See Calculation runs and schedules.
  • The amount is wrong. Walk the trace first. If the input was wrong, correct it through a governed correction, not by editing the ledger.
  • Pending does not match eligibility. Run Apply missing forfeitures on Commission Balances.
  • Balances do not match the G/L. See Reconciliation.
