Install and first-run setup

Install Bitta Retail POS from AppSource, run the five-step assisted setup wizard, review POS Setup essentials, assign permission sets and POS user PINs, and verify the register opens.

How to install Bitta Retail POS, run the assisted setup wizard, create your first store and terminal, assign permissions, and confirm the register opens - written for the administrator setting the app up for the first time. Deep configuration lives in the Configuration section; this page gets you from nothing to a working register.

Before you start

You need a Business Central environment (version 1.0.0.121 of the app supports current BC releases), an administrator account, and - if you plan to use US Sales Tax - existing Tax Areas configured in Business Central. The setup wizard never creates or modifies tax master data; configure Tax Areas, Tax Area Lines, and Tax Details in BC first.

Step 1 - Install the app

Install Bitta Retail POS from AppSource, or upload it through Extension Management if your partner supplied the package directly.

Installation is deliberately company-safe: deployment adds the application objects and emits install telemetry, but creates no company data - no POS Setup, number series, customers, tenders, stores, or terminals. Nothing happens in a company until an administrator runs the setup wizard there.

Step 2 - Run the assisted setup wizard

Open Tell Me (Alt+Q), search for Assisted Setup, and run Set Up Bitta Retail POS from the Getting Started group. The wizard has five steps:

  1. First Register - store code and name, Business Central location, tax calculation method (a fresh US company defaults to Sales Tax; other countries default to VAT), Store Tax Area, Prices Include Tax, and the register (terminal) ID and description.
  2. How This Register Works - choose a starting point for the register profile, such as Standard Checkout for quick retail counters.
  3. Optional Services - card payment provider and reader, receipt printing, kitchen output, scale, and starter barcode rules. Everything here can be configured later; secure payment credentials are stored in Isolated Storage, never on a table or page field.
  4. Business Central Readiness - a read-only check of the exact prerequisites the register and End of Day need: cash customer, posting groups, location, tax configuration, payment methods, tender settlement, user mapping, and number series, with assist buttons to fix gaps.
  5. Review and Finish - shows the effective choices, creates any missing safe defaults, assigns the register profile, and completes setup.

On Finish, the wizard runs idempotent company provisioning. Where records are missing, it creates:

  • Number series BAAPOS-ITEM, BAAPOS-CUST, BAAPOS-SALE, and BAAPOS-SHIFT, wired into POS Setup.
  • A walk-in cash customer, mapped to a real BC Customer whose posting groups are copied from an existing, proven-postable customer.
  • Tender methods CASH, CARD (external card terminal), VOUCHER, and ONACCT (On Account), with an On Account payment method whose balancing account is deliberately blank so on-account invoices stay open in receivables.
  • Default barcode setups (standard, weighted, price-embedded) - only when no barcode setup exists at all.

NOTE

Re-running the wizard is safe. It pre-fills existing setup, updates the store or terminal you name, and never overwrites customized tender methods or number series. Demo data is a separate assisted setup (Try Bitta Retail POS with Demo Data) so production setup and evaluation data cannot be confused - see the demo walkthrough.

Step 3 - Review POS Setup essentials

Company-wide behavior lives on the POS Setup card (open it from Tell Me). After the wizard, confirm the essentials:

  • The four number-series fields are filled and Cash Customer No. is set.
  • Tax Calculation Method matches your country and your BC tax configuration - see Taxes.
  • Receipt and consolidation settings suit your operation (Daily Consolidation Time defaults to 18:00).
  • Max PIN Attempts (default 3) and the other security toggles match your policy.

Step 4 - Assign permissions and create POS users

Bitta Retail POS ships two permission sets:

  • BAA POS - User for cashiers: run sales end to end, operate shifts and cash movements, take card payments, and sign in at a shared terminal. Setup, PIN administration, returns, and End of Day are excluded.
  • BAA POS - Admin for managers: everything in User plus setup, POS user and PIN administration, store/terminal/tender management, returns, End of Day, analytics, licensing, and demo data.

Assign the set on each user card, alongside a standard baseline role such as D365 BASIC (the baseline covers general reads of standard tables like Item and Customer). Then set each person's Role in My Settings: Bitta Retail POS (cashier Role Center) or Bitta Retail POS Admin (manager Role Center).

Finally, create a POS User record with a PIN for everyone who signs in at a shared terminal. POS Users are app data, separate from BC accounts, and carry the in-app gates: the Supervisor flag, Max Discount %, and Can Override Price. PINs are stored only as salted hashes.

Step 5 - Verify the register opens

  1. Open Tell Me and search POS Register (or use the Register action on either Role Center).
  2. If prompted, pick your store and terminal.
  3. If the PIN login appears, sign in with your POS User No. and PIN.
  4. Confirm the register loads with your item tiles and an empty cart. You are ready for your first sale.
