Bitta Retail POS guide
Dual pricing and surcharges
The price mode engine: cash discount and card surcharge programs, the Settles At Cash Price tender flag, tender rebalance, G/L adjustment posting, and receipt disclosure.

Dual pricing lets you reward cash or pass on card processing costs: one configurable percent, applied as a cash discount or a card surcharge, disclosed on the tender screen and the receipt, and posted to a G/L account you choose. Item prices and sale lines never change - the adjustment is computed once for the whole sale at tender time and stamped on the sale, so later setup changes never rewrite history.
The three price modes
POS Setup offers a Price Mode with one percent driving all modes:
| Price Mode | Shelf price is... | Math | Presentation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Off (default) | the only price | no adjustment, zero writes | everything behaves as without the feature |
| Dual Pricing | the card price | cash price = shelf x (1 - pct/100) | both totals shown at tender and on the receipt |
| Cash Discount | the card price | same math as Dual Pricing | card price shown; the discount is messaged |
| Surcharge | the cash price | fee = pct% added on card-settled amounts | fee disclosed at tender and on the receipt |
The adjustment is rounded once at the sale total, never per line, in the sale currency's accounting precision.
WARNING
Bitta Retail POS ships no compliance advice. Program legality - state rules, card network caps, and disclosure wording - stays with the merchant. In Surcharge mode a percent above 3 raises a non-blocking warning citing the card networks' cap, but nothing is hard-blocked.
Which tenders count as cash
Each tender method carries a Settles At Cash Price flag (the seeded CASH method is on, everything else off). The flag is merchant-editable per method - a check tender can legally be cash-priced. Qualification rules:
- Discount modes (Dual Pricing, Cash Discount): the discount applies only when every payment on the sale settles on a cash-priced tender - all or nothing.
- Surcharge mode: the fee applies to the portion of the sale not settled on cash-priced tenders. A split of 50.00 cash and the rest on card surcharges only the card-settled portion.
Qualification reads the flag as it was snapshotted onto each payment line at sale time, so a later change to the tender catalog never re-prices a completed sale. See Tender screen and split payments for the tender method catalog.
Setup
All fields live on the POS Setup Dual Pricing FastTab, plus the per-method flag:
| Field | Where | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Price Mode | POS Setup | Selects the program. Enabling a mode for the first time seeds a neutral default disclosure text. |
| Cash Discount % | POS Setup | The single percent: discount off the card price, or fee on card-settled amounts in Surcharge mode. |
| Price Mode Disclosure Text | POS Setup | The line shown on the tender screen and printed on every receipt while a mode is active. Fully editable. |
| Price Adjustment G/L Account | POS Setup | The account the per-sale adjustment posts to (negative for discounts, positive for surcharges). Required before an adjusted sale can post. |
| Settles At Cash Price | each Tender Method | Which tenders count as cash for the program. |
NOTE
In US Sales Tax companies the Price Adjustment G/L Account must be a direct-posting, non-taxable account (blank Tax Group Code and VAT Prod. Posting Group). An incompatible account is rejected before the sale becomes immutable.
What the cashier sees
Nothing changes in the selling flow. While a mode is active the tender screen shows the cash and card totals and the disclosure line, and each tender button carries a cash/card badge from its flag. At completion a one-shot rebalance settles the difference:
- A discount flows back to the customer as extra change on the cash line.
- A surcharge is added onto the largest card-priced payment - the amount keyed into the external card machine, or captured by the integrated charge.
For an integrated card payment taking the full remainder in Surcharge mode, the sale is stamped before the reader is commanded, so the card captures base plus fee in one charge; a declined or cancelled charge undoes the stamp. See Card payments at the register.
Payments already captured by a card processor are never inflated or shaved by the rebalance - any residual folds back into the stamped adjustment so the amount paid always equals the adjusted total.
Returns carry no adjustment: refunds are made at the price actually paid.
Receipt disclosure
While a mode is stamped on a sale the receipt gains a dual-pricing block: a "Cash discount: ..." or "Card surcharge: ..." line when the adjustment is non-zero, a bold AMOUNT DUE line showing what was actually charged, a card/cash price total line in Dual Pricing mode, and the configured disclosure text. With Price Mode Off the receipt is untouched. Validate the disclosure text on your physical receipt printer before enabling the program - see Receipts at the register.
Posting
A stamped adjustment posts as its own G/L line (the Price Adjustment G/L Account) on the created invoice - negative for discounts, positive for surcharges - both for single-sale posting and aggregated in end-of-day consolidation. The account's posting groups decide the adjustment's tax treatment. See Consolidated posting and Per-tender settlement for where the money itself lands.
Current limits
- Discount proration across mixed tenders is not built: the discount is all or nothing.
- A partial integrated card charge in Surcharge mode is deliberately left without a fee - on a mixed integrated split the fee is forgone rather than guessed.
- Multi-currency selling is not a supported workflow; adjustment math runs in the sale currency's configured accounting precision.
