Plans and rates

Rate lines and costs

Set rates by customer, product, dimension and date, see which rate line wins, and set commission costs by type.

Rate lines say which sales a component pays on, and at what rate or amount. Commission costs give the cost that margin commission is calculated from.

Add rate lines

  1. Open the plan, select the component in Components and choose Rate Lines.
  2. Add a line for each rate:
Field What it does
Customer Scope and Customer Code All Customers, a Customer (sell-to), a Bill-to Customer, or a Customer Commission Group.
Product Scope and Product Code All Products, an Item, an Item Category or an Item Commission Group.
Dimension Code, Dimension Value Code Only sales lines with this dimension value.
Unit of Measure Code For Amount per Unit: pay per this unit, such as CASE.
Starting Date, Ending Date The posting dates the line is valid for.
Rate % or Amount The rate, or the amount for per-unit and fixed methods.
Exclude Matching sales earn nothing from this component.
Min. Margin % Below this margin the line pays nothing.
Max. Line Discount % Above this line discount the line pays nothing.
Rate lines for a % of Sales component: 5 percent for all products and 8 percent for premium products

Two rate lines: the more specific premium line wins for premium items.

Which rate line wins

Only lines that match the customer, product, dimension and posting date take part. The most specific line wins:

  1. A line for a customer beats a line for a bill-to customer, which beats a customer group, which beats all customers.
  2. At the same customer level, an item beats an item group, which beats an item category, which beats all products.
  3. A dimension breaks a tie. Then the latest Starting Date wins.

So a line for a customer group beats a line for an item group. An Exclude line only works when it is the most specific line that matches. To keep an item out for everyone, use Commission Line Rules.

Why a line paid nothing

The sales document and the commission entries show a reason when a line earns nothing:

Reason What happened
No Rate Line No rate line matched the customer, product or date.
Excluded The winning rate line, or a line rule, excludes the sale.
Above Maximum Discount The line discount is above Max. Line Discount %.
Missing Cost No cost was found and When Cost Is Missing is Pay No Commission.
Below Minimum Margin The margin is below Min. Margin %.
Zero Rate The rate is 0.
No Margin The margin is zero or less.
Plan Blocked The plan was blocked on the posting date.
No Plan The salesperson has no plan on the posting date.

Set commission costs

Search for Commission Costs. A cost line has a Type (Item, Resource, G/L Account or All), an optional No., a Variant Code for items, a Starting Date, a Unit Cost (LCY) and a Cost Adjustment %.

Commission Costs with a cost for one item and a 3 percent cost adjustment for all items

A fixed commission cost for one item and a freight loading on every item.

Where the cost comes from, per base unit:

  1. The commission cost for the item and variant, then for the item, then the line of the type with a blank No., then the All line.
  2. The item card Unit Cost (when Use Item Unit Cost is on), or the resource card Unit Cost.
  3. The posted sales line's unit cost.
  4. The Cost Adjustment % of the most specific line that has one then raises or lowers the cost found.

Examples:

  • A line of Type Item with a blank No., Unit Cost 0 and Cost Adjustment % 3 loads 3% freight onto every item's cost.
  • A line of Type G/L Account gives a cost to installation or freight lines sold through a G/L account.
