Plans and rates

New customer rates

Pay a different rate on a customer's first sale or within days of it, or pay a component only on sales to new customers.

updated: applies-to: 2.0.0.0

With Within Days of First Sale and 30 New Customer Days, sales up to 30 days after the first sale pay the New Customer Rate %; later sales pay the plan rate. First Sale Only treats only the first invoice as new.

Sales within the new-customer window pay the New Customer Rate %.

A component can pay a different rate on sales to a new customer, or pay only on sales to new customers. Use it to reward salespeople for winning new business.

Set it up

  1. Open the plan. In Components, find the component.
  2. Set the new-customer fields:
Field What it does
New Customer Window When a sale counts as a sale to a new customer: Off, First Sale Only or Within Days of First Sale. Off turns the other fields off.
New Customer Days For Within Days of First Sale: how many days after the customer's first sale a sale still counts as new.
New Customer Rate % The rate paid on a sale to a new customer, instead of the rate from the rate lines. Leave it at 0 to keep the normal rate.
New Customer Only The component pays nothing on a sale that is not to a new customer. Leave it off to keep paying the normal rate on repeat sales.

The component still has to match the sale as usual, through its rate lines or margin bands. The new-customer rate replaces the rate it would have paid.

Who is a new customer

Bitta Commission looks at the bill-to customer of the sale and finds that customer's earliest posted sales invoice dated before the sale's posting date. Only invoices count, not credit memos or payments. The sale itself never counts.

New Customer Window The sale is to a new customer when
Off Never.
First Sale Only The customer has no posted invoice before this sale.
Within Days of First Sale The customer has no posted invoice before this sale, or the first one is at most New Customer Days before this sale.

Which rate is paid

For a component that pays a percentage (% of Sales, % of Margin or Margin Band Rate):

  1. A rate override on the sales document wins, when the component has Allow Rate Override on.
  2. Otherwise, for a new customer, New Customer Rate % replaces the rate, when it is not 0. Customer terms are not applied on top.
  3. Otherwise the normal rate applies, with any customer terms.

New Customer Rate % does not change an Amount per Unit or Fixed per Sale component. To pay those only for new customers, turn on New Customer Only.

Examples

A % of Sales component pays 5% from its rate line. New Customer Window is Within Days of First Sale, New Customer Days is 90 and New Customer Rate % is 8.

Sale Amount Commission
First invoice to a customer, 1 March 2,000.00 160.00 at 8%
Second invoice, 15 April (45 days later) 1,000.00 80.00 at 8%
Third invoice, 10 June (101 days later) 1,000.00 50.00 at 5%

A second component, a Fixed per Sale bonus of 100.00 with New Customer Window First Sale Only and New Customer Only on, pays 100.00 on the first invoice and nothing on the others.

See why

  • On Commission Earning Lines, Rate Source shows New Customer when the new-customer rate was used.
  • Explain Commission on the sales document says that the new-customer rate replaced the plan rate. The Commission Trace of the posted entry shows that the rate came from the new-customer condition.
  • A repeat sale on a New Customer Only component earns 0 with the reason Not a New Customer.
