Why this rate?

See which credit rules, margin pool and band gave a line its rate, on an open quote or order before posting and on a posted earning or invoice.

updated: applies-to: 1.2.0.0

When a salesperson asks why a line pays 4 percent instead of 10, the answer is usually a credit rule: an agreement, a customer or item rate, a deduction, or a margin band. Why This Rate? shows, for one line, every credit rule that was considered, what each one decided and why, and the margin pool and band behind the plan rate. This page shows you how to open the explanation on an open sales document and on a posted earning, and how to read it.

Before you start

  • On open quotes, orders and invoices, the explanation is part of the commission estimate. The estimate pages are granted by the Bitta Commission Simulation and AI permission set, which the Manager, Plan Designer, Setup Administrator and Auditor permission sets include. The Participant permission set does not. See Estimated commission.
  • On posted earnings, you can explain the earnings of your own participant, or of participants in your security scope. A participant can open it for their own earnings. See Permission sets.
  • The document needs a salesperson linked to a participant on a published plan.

Open the explanation before posting

  1. Open a sales quote, order or invoice that is not posted yet.
  2. In the Estimated Commission FactBox, choose Line Estimates.
  3. On Commission Line Estimates, select a line and choose Why this rate?.

The estimate reads the open lines as posted capture would: it credits the line salesperson, else the document salesperson, and the explanation is for that salesperson.

Open the explanation after posting

You can open it in two places:

  • On Commission Earnings, select an earning and choose Why This Rate?. The action is also on the Commission Earning card.
  • On a Posted Sales Invoice or Posted Sales Credit Memo, the Commission FactBox shows each participant's commission, rate, rate source, pool margin, status and paid, pending and held amounts. Mixed Rates shows when the lines of the document were paid at different rates. Choose Why This Rate? in the FactBox to explain the participant's largest earning on the document, or Earnings to open them.

For a posted earning, the pool key, pool margin and rate source are the values recorded at calculation. The plan rate and band are read again from the earning's rate table.

The FactBox shows data in the Participant, Manager, Processor, Auditor, Accountant, Setup Administrator and Support roles. In other roles it stays empty. When you open an earning outside your scope, the page tells you to ask your administrator for access.

Read the result

The Result group sums up the line:

Field What it shows
Line The document line and the component explained.
Credit Rules The outcome of the component's credit rules for the line.
Pool Key, Pool Margin % The margin pool of the line, for example its product line, and the pool's margin after deductions.
Band Hit The margin band the pool margin fell in. Zero when the component has no margin bands.
Plan Rate % The band or flat rate before Set Rate rules: the rest of the waterfall the rules compare with.
Line Rate % The rate the line is paid.
Rate Source The Set Rate rule code, BAND and the band number, FLAT, NO-RATE-MATCH or MISSING-COST.
Deduction % The total of the Deduct From Base rules for the line.

Below it, one row per credit rule shows the Rule Code, its Rule Purpose (Inclusion, Rate or Deduction), Outcome, Matched, Priority, the Rule Rate %, the Resolved Rate % after that step of the waterfall, the Deduction % and a Decision:

Decision Meaning
Winner This Include, Exclude or Set Rate rule decided.
Outranked It matched, but a rule with a better rank decided.
Applied A deduction that applies to the line.
Rest Of Waterfall A Set Rate rule further down that the winning rule compared with (Higher Of Rest or Lower Of Rest).
Rejected A condition did not hold.
Not Effective The rule is not effective on the document date.
Skipped By Stop An earlier rule with Stop Processing ended evaluation for this purpose.

The Reason column explains each decision in words: the condition that did not hold with the value the line has, the dates a rule is effective, the priority and specificity a rule won with, the rate a rule gives, or the percentage a rule deducts.

Typical answers

Question Look at
Why is the rate lower than the band? The Winner Set Rate rule and its Rate Basis.
Why did the agreement not apply? The Reason of the agreement rule. Bill-to Differs is No when the store was invoiced directly.
Why is the band lower than expected? Pool Margin % and Deduction %. Deductions lower the pool revenue, and a line priced by a Set Rate rule stays in the pool.
Why is the commission zero? Rate Source NO-RATE-MATCH or MISSING-COST, or an Exclude rule as Winner.

When a posted document earned nothing at all, Commission Document Outcomes names the reason: no plan, excluded lines only, a zero rate, no participant, or a hold. The participant statement shows the rate source of each line in its Rate source column. See Earnings statements.
