Before you start

Requirements

What Universal Search needs before you install: Business Central online 28.0 or later, Essentials or Premium, no dependencies, and two permission sets.

updated: applies-to: 1.0.0.1

This page applies to version 1.0.0.1; the current product version is 1.0.0.0.

Before you install Universal Search, confirm that your Business Central environment meets the requirements below and decide who will administer the app and who will only search. The checks take a few minutes and prevent two common problems later: a search page that returns nothing, and an admin who cannot start indexing.

Business Central version and deployment

  • Business Central online only. Universal Search targets the cloud. It is not available for on-premises installations.
  • Version 28.0 or later. The app is built against Business Central application and platform 28.0.
  • No dependencies. Universal Search does not require any other extension. It does not modify any standard Business Central page or table.
  • Editions. Essentials and Premium.
  • Language. The user interface is in English.

Universal Search is a single extension with no dependencies.

What the app adds

Universal Search installs as one extension, published by Bitta Apps, LLC. It adds four pages to Business Central:

  • Universal Search, the search page every user works with.
  • Universal Search Setup, where an administrator starts indexing, sets result limits and manages the free license.
  • Search Index Configuration, where an administrator chooses which tables and fields are searchable.
  • Universal Search Activation, the short wizard that activates the free license.

Search runs entirely inside your Business Central environment. The only outbound call the app makes is the optional license activation, which happens only after an administrator gives consent in the wizard. Business Central also sends the app's operational telemetry, such as license activation outcomes, to Bitta Apps' Application Insights, as it does for any extension that has telemetry configured.

Who does what

Universal Search has two audiences, and each one gets its own permission set:

Role What they do Permission set
Admin Runs the assisted setup, starts indexing, chooses tables and fields, monitors the index BAA SEARCH ADM (Universal Search - Admin)
User Opens Universal Search, types, narrows results and opens records BAA SEARCH (Universal Search - Use)

NOTE

An administrator who is not a SUPER user needs BAA SEARCH ADM to choose Start Indexing. That permission set includes write access to the job queue, which Start Indexing uses to schedule the background indexing job.

See Assign permissions for the steps, and the permission sets reference for every grant.

Cost

Universal Search is free. There is no trial period, no paid tier and no feature that depends on activating the license.
