Scale Lab

Verify manual, virtual COM, and physical Web Serial weight capture without confusing protocol logic with browser or hardware acceptance.

Purpose

Verify manual, virtual COM, and physical Web Serial weight capture without confusing protocol logic with browser or hardware acceptance.

Role

Administrator configures the terminal and item; cashier performs capture.

Prerequisites

HTTPS Business Central in Chrome or Edge for Web Serial, a weighed POS Item, browser permission, correct baud/data/parity/stop settings, and a calibrated test weight. No hardware is required for manual or virtual COM logic tests.

Enable / Configure

Enable Weighed Item Capture in the Register Profile and scale mode in effective Store/Terminal setup. Supported frame families are Generic/Rice Lake-style, Brecknell NCI/SBI-240, and current CAS. Configure stable-reading count and nonnegative tolerance.

Steps

  1. Manual: add the weighed item, choose manual weight, enter gross/tare or net as prompted, and confirm.
  2. Virtual COM: pair a virtual serial-port pair, send captured Generic, NCI, and CAS frames from the producer port, and select the consumer port in the Web Serial chooser.
  3. Physical: connect the scale, confirm terminal serial settings, pair through the browser chooser, place the known weight, wait for the required stable reads, and confirm or reweigh.
  4. Repeat through tile, scan/identity, Price Check quantity, and variant paths where applicable.

Expected Result

The Sale Line records quantity plus audited quantity source, gross, tare, and net facts. Unstable/error frames remain non-actionable. The first recommended physical certification device is a Brecknell SBI-240 after virtual tests pass.

When Disabled

The live-scale control is absent. A direct server attempt to record a scale capture rejects the profile-disabled feature. Manual fallback appears only when effective policy permits it.

Records / Accounting

Weight facts are stamped on BAA POS Sale Line. No separate accounting entry is made at capture. Posting uses the stamped quantity to create the BC sales line and, when shipped/posted, Item Ledger and value/accounting entries.

Recovery

Cancel/reweigh before confirming. Recheck browser HTTPS, permission, selected port, serial settings, units, parity, checksum/status text, and stable-read policy. Use manual entry only under the documented profile policy.

Test IDs

SCALE-MAN-001 manual; SCALE-VCOM-GEN-001 Generic; SCALE-VCOM-NCI-001 NCI; SCALE-VCOM-CAS-001 CAS; SCALE-PHY-BRECK-001 physical acceptance.

Screenshots

Task 9 captures final browser/hardware evidence from the tagged package. Record profile/Setup state, protocol and serial settings, device/virtual-port identity, known weight, Sale Line ID, tester/date, and Pass/Fail.
